The Chinese New Year commences today for 15 days bringing the Year of the snake to an end. This year it is the year of the horse for the first time in 12 years.

This year’s celebrations in the north-east are mainly on Stowell Street, China Town, Newcastle, with things like arts, crafts, entertainment, costumes and food on offer.

If you are born in the year of the horse, you will be active, energetic and love to be independent. In Chinese traditions, those born in the year of the horse won’t find potential partners with those born in the years of the rat, ox, rabbit or horse.

And if you were born in the year of the horse you will be joining celebrities like the 32nd US president, Franklin D Roosevelt and Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon.
