Review: Kingsman: The Golden Circle

4.5/5

When we saw the trailer for Kingsman: The Golden Circle and saw that Colin Firth (Harry) was in it, we were all a bit confused. How can a man who got shot straight in the face be alive? So my expectations for the new film were low – it was going to be another franchise that will go too far.

Well, I (thankfully) couldn’t have been more wrong.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle is just as fun and fast as the first but, in my opinion, much better. The plot is more plausible and funnier too, although nothing can quite beat that Church scene. Taron Egerton (Eggsy) has charisma and is infinitely likeable in the new film, as is Mark Strong who plays the role of Merlin excellently. You will never hear John Denver’s Country Roads in the same way again.

This instalment of Kingsman centres around a drug cartel, known as ‘The Golden Circle’, that poisons its users in order to get governments’ attention. In exchange for an antidote, the U.S. government must legalise drugs or face losing a huge percentage of its population.

In charge of the drug cartel is crazy Poppy (Julianne Moore) who is quite happy to have a human put in a blender and then make a burger out of him. Moore does an excellent job of capturing the bizarre and crazed spirit of Kingsman‘s villain this time around, even though we do feel slightly sorry for Elton John (yes, the real one) who is held captive by Poppy to entertain her in her drug plantation in Asia.

The Golden Circle was just brilliant and a joy to watch. Director Matthew Vaughn brings the pop, vividness and unique nature back again in every scene. It’s completely implausible and far-fetched, but it’s a modern-day (much better) James Bond that doesn’t take itself too seriously. And, really, who doesn’t love a fight scene to Elton John’s Saturday?
