Big Sam Gets the England Job

Sam Allardyce – manager of Sunderland AFC – is set to be appointed as the new manager of the England national team, after Roy Hodgson’s disgraced resignation after the team’s embarrassing defeat to Iceland in the knockout stages of Euro 2016.

Traditionally, the England job has been seen as something of a poisoned chalice with no manager able to take the team beyond a quarter final of a major competition since Terry Venables in 1996. Intense speculation and scrutiny is also delivered by the media, who have been known to incessantly attack the private lives of past incumbents.

Allardyce has managed teams such as  Newcastle, Bolton, Blackburn and Notts County; however, his biggest success came at West Ham when he achieved promotion from the Championship in 2011-12 and then successfully reestablish the side as a formidable Premier League force. Having said this, Allardyce has never won a major trophy before. Here’s hoping that’s set to change.

Big Sam even received a rare bout of praise from Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho, who said  of Allardyce, “He is more than ready. He is a good motivator and can create a good team spirit.” Sunderland will now be seeking their ninth manager is just eight years.
