Big Weekend Round Up

27 May 2014

By Lauren E. White

The prestigious Radio 1 Big Weekend took place last Saturday and Sunday, in the wonderful city of Glasgow and this year with it coincidentally being bank holiday weekend, it allowed time yesterday to nurse hangovers aplenty.

Kicking off the fantastic line-up, the infamous One Direction surprised everyone as they were first on the bill. Singing their smash-hit single ‘Story of My Life’ and their new track ‘You & I’ (available to purchase on iTunes right now: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/you-i-ep/id854568244) the boys had the crowd in complete hysteria ready for the following acts. For the rest of Saturday, acts of the likes of Coldplay, Ed Sheeran and ‘Happy’ singer Pharrell Williams had to keep the 60,000 strong crowd entertained.

Rounding the Saturday shenanigans off was left in the capable hands of Coldplay; with front man Chris Martin being a firm fixture ‘stage left’ for the majority of performances, even taking the stage again on Sunday with the Kings of Leon. Coldplay set Glasgow on fire with a barrage of hits from their six- album discography including ‘Yellow’, ‘Magic’, ‘Fix You’ and ‘Every Teardrop is a Waterfall’, at times just leaving it to the Glaswegian crowd to man their imaginary mics..

Headlining Sunday’s main stage was pop queen Katy Perry. Singing her chart-dominating single ‘Dark Horse’ and her huge hit – which welcomed her back into the charts themselves – ‘Roar’, both from her latest album PRISM. Before Perry’s appearance was break-through indie group The 1975, most famous for their catchy tune ‘Chocolate’ which made it to their set-list. Other artists performing on Sunday included another break-through boy band, The Vamps and the highly anticipated Kings of Leon.

With a superb line-up, Radio 1’s Big Weekend was not an event to miss for all music lovers, seeing as it included a genre variety ranging from mainstream pop to rock and indie, all in the space of just two days.
