At two and a half hours long, Batman V Superman is already looking to be a looong ride of fights, drama and brooding heroes – it’s roughly the length of one of Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Now BVS director Zack Snyder has revealed that the movie’s R-rated cut is up to 30 minutes longer, which brings the grand total up to three hours.

Snyder shared a detailed interview with The Hollywood Reporter, regarding the Blu-Ray/DVD release:

“[The DVD version] is a half-hour longer, and some of that additional material is some of the stuff we took out for the rating,” Snyder said. “I was like, ‘Cool, I can put it back in for the director’s cut.’ There was nothing by design. This was the material I just put back in, and then when [the MPAA] looked at it again, they were like, ‘Oh, now the movie’s rated R.'”

This would totally make sense as in the trailer we see Bats beating the hell out of some crooks from second one. The entire film has a much darker feel to it, which fans are loving.

The director explained that it will not have a ‘hard R-rating’, going on to say there will be no nudity. The reason for the R-rating was because in terms of scale, there will be a lot of violence. The intesity of the violence is said to tip the scale, and the extended cut will contain more, and be known as the Ultimate Edition.

Batman v Superman opens in just seven days, and we can’t wait (or rather, I can’t wait).

Check out the most recent trailer if you haven’t already!
