No longer shall I be charged an extra 50p for using my card on Just Eat. No longer, I say!

Consumers will no longer be charged extra for using credit or debit cards in transactions, the government has declared. From January of 2018, businesses will not be able to add any kind of surcharge to card payments.

Businesses that were more likely to surcharge were food delivery apps and airlines and smaller businesses that normally charge more for card payments. Places like newsagents typically do this. According to the Treasury, an estimate of £473m was spent on these charges in 2010 alone.

A directive from the EU bans surcharges on Visa and MasterCard, however, it doesn’t seem to stop some places. Looking at you again, Just Eat.

A few airlines, including Monarch and British Airways, have reduced their charges in the last year. However, food apps are amongst the highest-charging businesses, also according to the Treasury. Hungry House and Just Eat add 50p for using a card. Which is really annoying when you have just enough for pizza and chips but only that much.

It’s likely that stores will compensate by upping their prices slightly, to cover the extra cost they have to pay when it comes to card transactions.

Not having to deal with pesky surcharging sounds good though.

Now about that pizza and chips…
