Crohn’s Disease at an All Time High in Young People

The number of young people admitted in to hospital for Crohn’s disease in England and Wales is at an all-time high. Back in 2003/4 only 4,937 16 to 29 year olds were treated for the disease, last year that figure rose to 19,405 young people being treated with Crohn’s disease.

The disease attacks the immune system. Around 250,000 people suffer from the disease and the exact cause is unknown. All patients living with the illness have to take medication for the rest of their lives. Crohn’s disease can result in severe diarrhoea, cramps, tiredness and weight loss.

Crohn’s disease can form anywhere along the gastrointestinal tract, it takes place when the walls of the tact become inflamed and ulcers can develop, making it painful when food passes through the intestine.
