The Last Jedi has been dividing fans all over the world, but none other than Mark Hamill himself also has issues with the new movie. Spoilers ahead.

Despite the strong reception from critics, fan reaction has been mixed, with many opposing Rian Johnson’s decisions with a few characters. Luke Skywalker is a sore subject for fans and the actor himself. In an interview uploaded by the channel Jar Jar Abrams, Hamill revealed that the new Luke is not ‘my Luke Skywalker’.

Even before the movie came out, Hamill had mixed feelings about the direction his character had taken. For those who haven’t seen it, Luke went to a secluded section of the galaxy to die alone. His failure as a new Jedi master hit him harder than anything before. He planned to be the last of the Jedi.

“I said to Rian, ‘Jedi’s don’t give up.’ I mean, even if [Luke] had a problem, he would maybe take a year to try and regroup. But if he made a mistake, he would try and right that wrong, so right there, we had a fundamental difference,” Hamill said. “But it’s not my story anymore, it’s somebody else’s story and Rian needed me to be a certain way to make the ending effective. That’s the crux of my problem. Luke would never say that. I’m sorry.”

He did admit though, that this character is in new hands. But he still thinks of Luke as the hopeful, determined character that George Lucas made.

Another fan query was that of Rey’s parents. Throughout the last two years, we’ve heard some weird fan theories (from Kenobi to Phasma being her parents). But nope, her parents were nobodies, which annoyed quite a few fans.

But put it this way, how much more work would that have been?

Rian defended his decision saying:

‘I can understand why that answer doesn’t feel good. It’s not supposed to feel good. It’s supposed to be the hardest thing she could possibly hear in that moment.’
