New Zealand’s New Year’s Nonsense

New Year’s Eve is a time for celebration. But in New Zealand, it’s a time for very tame civil resistance.

Everyone loves a drink on the dawn of the New Year, which can sometimes result in some rather nasty messes. We’ve all had at least one horror story from a party at the end of the year. Well, to combat this, New Zealand imposed a ban on drinking, on the Tairua estuary in Coromandel. It didn’t stop this group though.

A bunch of friends literally made a tiny island during low tide on Sunday night, excluding them from the ban.

New Zealand – a wonderfully strange country.

Public drinking faced fines of up to $250 in the Coromandel area, however, Inspector John Kelly admired the dedication, saying:

‘That’s creative thinking – if I had known [about it] I probably would have joined them.’

So, to all those who are looking for creative ways around public bans, take note.

Or don’t and just do your drinking on New Year’s Eve at home. Like a normal person.

I need more friends.
