So we got our first big(ish) chunk of gameplay footage from IGN of the upcoming PS4 and PC game, ‘No Man’s Sky’. In the 18-minute-long video we see a fraction of what the game will eventually have to offer.

We begin on a planet, and immediately the colour pallet smacks us in the face like a brick. It’s bright, it’s colourful, it’s vibrant, and vivid, and (considering the footage was capture on a PS4…) it looks surprisingly good. One of the developers, Sean Murray, talks through some of the mechanics and how the game works.

Other than what we’ve already seen, we now have a strong idea of what the game focuses on. The player, and what that individual player wants to achieve and do within the realms of the galaxy. Each world is proceeduraly generated, which offers potentially hundreds of thousands of different worlds and creatures to discover.

Another key aspect of the game that Sean picked up on was just this. There are potentially hundreds of hours that could be put into the game, from exploring full planets, to dabbling in a few systems at a time, or building up an ‘encyclopedia’, as he put it, of stuff you have found. Games today centre around hand holding, and showing the player exactly what they need to do in order to progress. From what was shown, it really looks as though it is up to the player to decide what they want to do, and as far as progression is concerned, this is the case as well.

Resources can be gathered by literally shooting at rocks jutting out of the ground, and each mineral you find is all part of a ‘sci-fi periodic table’ made specifically for the game. Collecting these resources adds to your revenue, or ‘units’, which act as your currency in game. This can be used for buying upgrades for your ship and weapons, as well as your suit to go where no man has ever gone before.

It looks promising, but we still have to question. What if it gets really boring?

While there may be thousands of things to explore and discover, what if you spend 3 hours landing on planets that have nothing but a few weird creatures, then take off to find another planet which looks similar, but just with a few different creatures.

HOPEFULLY, this wont happen, and indeed hopefully our expectations will be met.

Hopefully.
