A few days ago, Sam Smith took to Twitter to show shock and despair after one of his friends was racially abused in London, something that he believed would ‘never ever ever ever… happen here’. He went on to say: ‘I feel like I have to shine some sort of light on it. The police were so unhelpful in the situation and it’s deeply shocked me.’ However, this resulted in a huge amount of backlash from the public, even fans, who were surprised at how little awareness the singer seemed to have about the racial prejudice that occurs every day across the world. Some even went as far to make reference to Sam’s skin colour, as a prime example of ‘British white denial’. Although his tweets did portray him to be slightly uneducated on racism, this comment goes a little bit too far.

However, on viewing the responses to his tweets, Sam went on to post a statement on Instagram, to explain the situation a little bit further. He stated:

‘This is not about me in any way, it’s about a deep rooted issue we have in our society that should now be extinct’. He also added that although he doesn’t ‘profess to know or remotely understand what it means to be on the receiving end of racial abuse’, he does ‘know that it is wrong and completely unacceptable’, due to being bullied for years himself.

What do you think? Is Sam uneducated on the reality of racism in the 21st century, or were his tweets simply misconstrued?
