Speeding Fines Set to Rocket

After a rise in penalties for drivers using their phone at the wheel, another change to the law could mean that drivers caught speeding could be fined up to 150% of their weekly salary.

From next month, harsher penalties will be introduced across the country, with courts in England and Wales given the power to give out longer sentences, and bigger fines.

Currently, speeding motorists can be fined between £1,000-2,500 if caught on a motorway. Although the upper bracket limit will not increase, more drivers could be made to pay the larger sum when changes are introduced on April 24.

So, if you want to make sure that you don’t get caught out by the new changes, remember the speeds that could get you a large fine:

20mph speed limit; 41mph+

30mph; 51mph +

40mph; 66mph +

50mph; 76-85 +

60mph; 91mph +

70mph; 101mph +

After The Sentencing Council held a consultation back in 2016 on road safety, it was determined that current guidelines ‘did not properly take into account the increase in potential harm that can result as speed above the speed limit increases.’

So, we could be seeing a lot more changes in place in the near future.

What do you think?
