As of yesterday, a new penalty is now in place for drivers who use their mobile phones while driving. After a number of different newspapers published photos of drivers texting, or using their phone at the wheel, over the last few months, it’s sparked a debate about just how important it is to be distraction-free whilst driving.

So, the usual penalty for being caught has now been doubled, meaning that as well as being fined £200 for using your mobile whilst driving you will also be given six points on your license.

If you’re confused about the law, it is illegal to use a hand-held phone while driving, even if you’re stuck in traffic.

Emphasising the importance of adhering to the new law, Ron Hogg, Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington, stated:

“These new penalties are a real deterrent to dangerous driving. But an even greater deterrent should be the knowledge that being distracted by a phone could result in an accident, serious injury to the driver and others, and even death. The phone call will wait. But if you kill someone, that is not something you can un-do.

“In one week in January, a total of 72 motorists were apprehended for using their mobile phones whilst driving in the Durham Constabulary area. The week of action was carried by the Cleveland and Durham Specialist Operations Unit.”

According to ITV, 22 people were killed and 99 seriously injured in road-accidents during 2015 where a motorist using a mobile was a contributing factor.

So, it’s important to refrain from using your mobile whilst driving, not only for your own safety but also for the safety of others.

What do you think about the new law?
