Storm Report: Angus Has Hit

20 November 2016

By Joseph

Last winter, Storm Desmond and Storm Eva (arguably the worst storms of last year) caused a combined estimated total of around £1.1 billion worth of damage, leaving many areas of Britain more than a little bit soggy.

The Met Office introduced named Storms last year to raise awareness of severe weather capable of having a significant impact on the UK. Note that the practice of naming storms only takes place during the windstorm season, which ran from November to March last year, explaining why we haven’t heard any less-than-intimidating names from the Met Office recently. Each season the naming cycle renews. Last year yielded eleven named storms, with Katie being the last one, and the first named storm of this season, Angus, has just hit the south coast of England.

After being detected early on Saturday morning as an area of low pressure rushing in from the Atlantic, the Met Office has issued amber and yellow warnings across Southern England throughout the night as winds of up to 80mph have been reported in some areas. A “major incident” was declared by Devon and Cornwall police at 4:15am on Sunday morning as a residential park in North Devon was evacuated after the River Mole burst its banks. In the English channel off the coast of Dover, a 650ft long cargo ship issued a distress call at around 7:20am on Sunday having collided with a barge – two coastguard search and rescue helicopters were sent to evacuate the 23 crew members on board the sinking vessel.

At midday on Sunday, the Met Office has an active amber warning for South West England and yellow warnings covering much of England and Wales, including the North East, although the main body of the storm shouldn’t cause us much trouble. Some areas in the North have been hit by heavy snow.

Here’s a few pictures of Storm Angus’s wrath:
