What to do in a terrorist attack

5 June 2017

By Lauren E. White

Unfortunately as we live in an increasingly dangerous age, we have to be vigilant and alert at all times to protect ourselves and our families and friends.

Part and parcel of this means being aware of what to do in a terrorist attack.

We might be out with friends, as we saw on Saturday night in London, or we might be at a concert, as we saw two weeks ago in Manchester, so we should be aware of the advice from the police and the government.

It was issued again on Saturday night during the attack and we thought it would be appropriate to share with our readers.

1. Run

You are advised to run to safety and stay there. Only run to safety if it is safe to do so, and possible.

2. Hide

If you can’t run do safety, you need to hide somewhere – and somewhere you’re definitely safe.

Advice says that you must remember that just because you can’t see the attacker doesn’t mean the attacker can’t see you. We must also remember that bullets can go through bricks, so our hiding place must be somewhere solid and sustainable.

Make sure you keep quiet and turn your phone on silent mode.

3. Tell

You are advised to call 999 as soon as you are in a safe position to do so.

If you are hiding, you can still call 999 and do so in silence.

You call the number as usual and if you have to remain silent, you dial ’55’ and a police team will be dispatched.

We hope all of our readers stay safe and remain vigilant.
