If you’re sentenced to death in America, you can often be waiting for years, sometimes decades, before it’s your turn for the chopping block but some prisoners on Death Row in the state of Arkansas could find that their day comes much sooner and the reason why is both saddening and laughable.

The state’s supply of lethal injection drug is due to reach its expiry date in a few weeks so they have to execute as many prisoners as possible in order to use it up to avoid having to throw it out. There’s a time and place for reducing wastage and this situation is certainly not it. Death penalty ethics aside, this sudden rush to execute prisoners just shows that whoever came up with the solution to this problem should really be working a different job. If this isn’t a reminder to keep an eye on expiration dates, I don’t know what is…

You can imagine a conversation taking place between the executioners in the Arkansas prison:

“Jeez, we sure are going through these prisoners!”

“Well, the midazolam runs out of date soon and we’ve still got a full bottle of it left.”
