Crowning Disaster at Miss Universe 2015

Disaster struck Sunday night at one of the world’s most famous beauty pageants when the wrong contestant was crowned as the winner.

Up until the final moments when the results were revealed, everything had run smoothly and according to plan at the annual pageant, which sees women from different countries competing for the ultimate crown of Miss Universe. The show saw the women narrowed down to two final contestants, Miss Philippines and Miss Colombia, when host Steve Henry accidentally crowned the wrong girl the winner.

After reading the results card wrong, Steve Henry  crowned Ariadna Gutierrez, Miss Colombia, as this year’s Miss Universe, handing her the winning bouquet of flowers. Last year’s winner Paulina Vega, also a former Miss Colombia, crowned Gutierrez in the confusion and the crowd erupted with joy that Colombia had won two years in a row.

Just moments later, after being informed of his mistake, a mortified Henry apologised for the blunder and announced that Miss Colombia was actually first runner up and that the Miss Universe 2015 crown did in fact belong to Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.

After a moment of disbelief, Wurtzbach made her way back to centre stage where neither contestant was sure what to do. Live cameras continued to roll as both girls stood in awkward confusion, until finally a former Miss Universe appeared on stage and quickly swapped the crown from Gutierrez to Wurtzbach.

The audience and social media went wild in confusion at the error – anger for Miss Colombia, and in happiness for the first ever Miss Universe from the Philippines.
