Liverpool’s opening game of the Champions League was up against the Bulgarian side Ludogorets. The game could have went either way throughout but Liverpool stood up to the mark and fought through to the final minute.

Liverpool took the lead in the 82minute after their £60 million signing Mario Balotelli controlled the ball and turned in a single movement before placing the ball past the keeper with his right foot.

In the 90th minute the Ludogorets substitute Dani Abalo rolled in an equaliser past the Liverpool keeper. The fans were almost certain that the game would end a draw after the last minute equaliser but only moments later Liverpool were awarded with a penalty.

And who else would it be to stand up to the penalty spot than Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard calmly struck the penalty into the bottom right corner giving Liverpool a 2-1 victory over the spirited Bulgarian side.

The game didn’t go all Liverpool’s way but if any club know the value of not giving up in the Champions league it is Liverpool and when Marquillo was brought down by Borjan after he miscontrolled a back pass the stage was set for Gerrard – and he duly delivered.
