How To: Turn your Day Around

19 March 2017

We’ve all had it. That feeling when you get out of bed, one eye open and hair in front of the other. That sinking feeling. That irritating little pest in your ear telling you this: ‘today is going to be one of those days’.

What ‘one of those days’ means to you might be different to what it means to me. I’d imagine everyone’s is different but the commonality we share when discussing this imprecise evaluation of 24 hours is that things aren’t going the way we want them to.

Something I find often happens to me during one of those days, though, is the feeling that there’s no way out of that type of day and I’m stuck in a rut for the whole of it.

However, recently I’ve realised it doesn’t have to be that way. The only reason you think it’s ‘one of those days’ is because you’ve allowed yourself to think that way and told yourself it’s going to stay that way.

So, how exactly do you get out of the running wheel that is one of those days?

1. Think

Yep. It’s that simple.

Use your noggin.

Think about what’s put you in this fettle. If it’s just something you experienced when you woke up this morning, it’s easier to dispel the idea straight away – you haven’t even had time to think ‘what will be will be’. Don’t jump to a conclusion in the introduction.

If it’s more complicated like not doing the work due in period one (nightmare) or missing the bus, think about how that is just one event in your day. Then think about how it’s just one event in the week. One event in the month. One event in the year. And one event in the whole of your life. Is it really worth ruining 24 hours over it?

No, it’s not.

2. What makes you happy?

Music is a great one for this as if you have a deadline ahead, reading your favourite book won’t help you reach it.

Put on a song that motivates you, makes you happy or brings back a fond memory and let it wash over you. Hopefully that should lighten your mood and make you more open to turning your day around.

3. Mute the group chat and get on with the job

Put the rest of the world on hold while you recover what might have been lost. Take the time to do what you need to do, even if it means muting the group chat.

It will make you feel a whole lot better if you discipline yourself and have something to show for it.

Good luck to you all.
