This week, “spoiled rich girl gentrifying south London” Hetty Douglas reminded us all of just how mindful you have to be when you have access to a public forum. In case you don’t know the full story, Douglas posted this on her Instagram story:

Twitter user, was rightfully outraged and posted this tweet which ended up going viral:

Being called out on her classist attitude caused Douglas to delete her Instagram which had 15,000 followers. Before she deleted it, Twitter users still had plenty of time to go and screenshot some of the 25-year-old’s posts.

You cannot degrade the working class and then try and pass your mediocre paintings off as art and claim there was any hard work or brains put into it. Maybe she’d have to do some actual graft if she wasn’t rich enough to be able to just sit around and create “art” that wouldn’t even place 1st in a primary school competition. No good will come from abusing her on Twitter other than the fact that now, she will think twice before humiliating people for going out and doing a job. What makes the whole situation worse is that 2 years ago, she posted this picture of herself with her job seekers’ allowance form.

There’s nothing wrong at all with claiming JSA providing that two years later you’re not going to make a post implying that builders are less intelligent than you.

Other posts show Douglas seemingly trying to appear working class. If you didn’t know any better, you might think she was some sort of painter/decorator going out and doing a useful day’s work:

If you’re worried about the men in the photo- don’t be. They laughed the whole thing off with the help of Hetty Douglas’ “art”:

Hetty can have all the GCSEs she wants, these men probably earn more than her and as scaffolders, they are the true artists of the London skyline.

The men all work for company GKR Scaffolding and a spokesperson for the company defended its staff:

“Scaffolding operatives are highly trained in technical capabilities and have to be able to work safely at height in the highest risk environments. It’s not a job everyone can do. Our scaffolders have worked as part of construction teams that built The Shard, are reconstructing Tottenham Hotspur’s new stadium and renovating The Royal Opera House and the Royal Albert Hall. The skyline of London and many of its architectural icons would look very different without the skills of our staff.”

The most gracious response to Douglas’ bullying came from the Owner of GKR, Lee Rowswell as he invited the spoilt girl to come and see the work the scaffolders do.

He said: “We understand that Hetty would not have expected such an overwhelming reaction to her post. Therefore we would like to invite her to join us at GKR for a day and see our work on site in London, meet some of the team and drop into the GKR Academy where we train scaffolders in technical and managerial skills. We have a skills gap in the UK that can be filled if more people realised that school cannot measure all abilities, and skills honed outside the classroom are just as valuable. We’d welcome the opportunity to show Hetty why we are proud of our work and the contribution we make.”

Douglas could go about this whole situation in two ways: she can pretend that she is being unfairly criticised and act as if she’s the victim or she can apologise to the men she photographed and change her attitude. If Hetty wants to make things right and show the workmen that she regrets her actions, taking Mr Rowswell up on his offer would be the perfect opportunity.
