So the second in the critically acclaimed Hobbit series by Peter Jackson. This one delivers two and a half hours of orc slaying, dragon fighting, and fire breathing action. As we all know, the second film is always the hardest to do in any series, but Jackson did well, with actor Martin Freeman returning as a much more confident and battle ready Bilbo, we see a darker side to the film. We finally get to Erebor, and meet the monster Smaug. Voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch, he and Martin truly deliver a brilliant performance during the scene in Smaug’s gold room. It’s tense, and generally gripping seeing the small hobbit conversing with this massive red dragon.

Even though, it’s only now loosely based on the book (with the addition of Legolas, The Pale Orc, and The Necromancer storylines) it’s still an enjoyable film, and one I was craving to see, and still am. The fight scenes were done perfectly, Smaug looked terrifying, and of course, the dwarves looked amazing. It was all around a really good sequel.

There were a few bits that I felt were there for filler until we got to the good bits, but even so, it was still brilliant. My only concern is, that in the next film, will it be too much to handle? With the five armies, AND Smaug, AND the Necromancer, you have to wonder…will Jackson pull it off? My guess, probably. CAN’T WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR!
