Whether it be by memes, tweets or news articles, everyone has heard about the seven new habitable planets that NASA has discovered. The planets are being referred to as TRAPPIST-1 and what’s exciting about them is that they seem to resemble our own solar system. They orbit a star the size of Jupiter in the constellation of Aquarius and six out of seven of these planets could have earth-like properties such as liquid on the surface and possibly some organisms. Some people are wondering if we will be able to relocate to these planets once all of our natural resources have been exhausted or in the event of some sort of nuclear disaster. The short answer to that question is no. With our current level of space equipment, it would take over 11.000 years to get there which is, quite obviously, very inconvenient.

What is convenient though is the fact that these planets are close enough for scientists to be able to properly study. Soon, we could have some in-depth information about these planets which won’t only be fascinating to learn, but it could also help us to better our understanding of our planet.

At the minute, NASA scientists are just looking for signs of an atmosphere which would in turn indicate the possibility for life on these new planets.
