Sloth Saviour

23 April 2014

By James

A woman in Suriname has become known as the country’s foremost keeper of Sloths. Monique Pool, from Paramaribo (the Capital city of Suriname), has taken care of over 200 of the animals during her career as Sloth-harbourer.

The unofficial sanctuary was formed when Pool lost her dog, and contacted the Suriname Animal Protection Society in an attempt to locate it. This failed, but Pool ended up with Loesje, a three-toed sloth which the society was unable to care for. Now her house is full of sloths, and she is the first person the emergency services call whenever any are found.

Pool has also taken care of giant anteaters, which have been responsible for at least three deaths in the past.
