Song Review: Home

8 February 2016

In October last year, One Direction released what is possibly one of their best songs ever (pardon the pun).

Home was released as a part of the Perfect EP bundle that fans can buy for around £3 on iTunes, but not on their album Made in the A.M, much to the disappointment of their fans.

It is the lyrics in Home that fans have picked up on since its release. Penned by the band’s own Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne, the song is a credit to the pair. Beginning with the lyric ‘there was something missing in her eyes’ and ending with ‘it was there, I saw it in your eyes’, Home shows a clear progression and a journey.

Many fans have related the track to Tomlinson’s sexuality, believing that he is secretly being closeted by the band’s management. There is reason behind the belief that the lyric, ‘told myself I kind of liked her’ relates to the 24-year-old’s past relationships with girls before launching to global success in 2010. Fans also believe that the ‘could we ever be enough? Baby we could be enough,’ lyric hints at a happy ending for Louis as he has finally found someone who ‘feel[s] the same’.

Whether or not you believe in the theory that Tomlinson is being forced to hide his sexuality, Home has became what is labelled as a ‘safe song’ for fans. It is the track that they can turn to when they are alone in order to give them comfort – especially when Tomlinson, who has lead vocals on the track and carries the chorus, tells them that when they are ‘lost’, he will ‘find the way’ and ‘make this feel like home’. It is a truly beautiful song written with clear intent of making the listener feel grounded and strong no matter where they are.
