Staying Safe

This year marks the 409th year of the tradition of setting alight a pile of wood and burning a stuffed replica of Guy Fawkes on the top it. On average 1,000 people are admitted into A&E with a fire-work related injury; with around 500 of those being under 18.

Organised displays are a lot safer and have better fireworks, but if you are hosting your own firework display, here are a few obvious tips on how to say safe.

  • Always light a firework at arm’s length.
  • Only light one firework at a time.
  • Wear protective clothing such as gloves.
  • Never go back to a lit firework.
  • Have a bucket of water near you at all times.
  • Stand well back after the firework is lit.
  • Don’t use flammable liquids such as petrol or paraffin to light the bonfire.
  • Make sure all fireworks are securely in the ground.
  • Don’t wear loose or easily flammable clothing.
  • Make sure your bonfire is small so I can’t get out of hand.
