The great British debate about how you should pronounce scone has been going on for decades – does it rhyme with gone, or with bone? Well, we might finally have a conclusive answer. The results are pretty interesting too.

According to a YouGov poll, the ‘correct’ way to pronounce ‘scone’ is to rhyme it with ‘gone’ – this was supported by 51% of the population surveyed. In comparison, only 42% of Britons argued instead for it rhyming with bone. There were some minor discrepancies, and this was participants who either said that they didn’t know, or that they pronounced it differently. Is that even possible?

So, why is there such a split in opinion?

The results of the poll showed that there was a prominent difference in pronunciation depending on regional dialect. Those living in the north of England and Scotland preferred the ‘gone’ rhyme, whereas those in the south preferred the other option.

However, perhaps more significantly, there appeared to be a distinct divide between class. “Those in the C2DE social grade are evenly split, with 45 per cent going with the “bone” pronunciation and 46 per cent going with’gone’,” according to the organisation.

“However, among ABC1s there is a very real split. The middle classes are far more likely to go with the ‘gone’ option (55 per cent) than ‘bone’ (40 per cent).”

So, what do you think? Is that the end of the debate? Or, will it never be over?
