Remember when we mentioned that meme-ing Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover’s This is America might be the whole point of the song, to begin with? Well, someone made a woman’s edit, which we also mentioned in that article.

While feminism is something we here at B**p align ourselves with, this may not be the best way to go about it. YouTuber Nicole Arbour has made her own edit of the song, changing the lyrics to be about ‘female positivity/empowerment’.  But, many have accused her of ‘stealing [their] culture for money’ and belittling ‘black pain’.

Gambino’s video is about the constant battle within America with racism and gun violence. The song, while no to everyone’s taste, is definitely for a particular people. Many on Twitter levied their criticism.

Nicole posted a lengthy message about it, trying to explain the thought process behind the edit. But it still sounds…weird?

‘Bring light to women’s experiences’ is where it feels off. There are many things that can plague a person’s life. Racism and sexism are among these things but taking something that was supposed to be for one cause, refashioning it and then redistributing it feels odd.

It’s not even a parody, it just sits in this space where we can sort of see where it was coming from, but it feels too on the nose. Too ‘tongue in cheek’ as Nicole puts it. But maybe that’s the problem.

Donald Glover’s video wasn’t tongue in cheek. It was very blunt with its point. It would be the same if something like this was done to Joyner Lucas’ I’m Not Racist. It doesn’t have the same impact and the message feels twisted.

Plus this woman also uploaded a video called ‘Dear Fat People’ which was a solid five minutes of ripping into fat people. So yeah.

Draw your own conclusions.
