After a week placed second in the Championship League table, Newcastle United have managed to claw their way back to number one. This was only possible because of Newcastle’s 2-1 victory over Brentford which scored them 3 points and Brighton’s loss to Preston North which of course scored them 0 points. If Brighton had have won their game, they would have the top spot as there is only a one-point difference between them and Newcastle.

In the Newcastle game, the first goal was scored by season star Dwight Gayle in the 20th minute and the second, in the 79th minute, was scored by Daryl Murphy. However, the game did not go as smoothly as manager Rafa Benitez hoped, as Gayle had to leave the pitch due to a knee injury. In the after-match interview, he said,

We needed to work hard in defence to ensure we didn’t concede. But we did at the beginning of the second half after losing one player and then another and another after that.

Brentford manager Dean Smith was less than pleased about the game, especially as his team lost their three game win streak. He told the BBC that he believed Brentford “deserved to win it”.
