UK game retailer Grainger Games is shutting down all stores effective immediately. The chain is primarily based in the north and is a tad smaller than the retailer Game, but they do have 67 stores, which is certainly no small feat.

Last week, gamesindustry.biz reported that the company’s supplier credit limits had been cut, which signalled something was afoot. Yesterday, Eurogamer’s Robert Purchese reported on an email that was sent to 21 staff of the companies 67 stores.

It read:

‘We regret to inform you that we require you to close your store imminently due to the ongoing issues surrounding the business’s critical financial situation. Your store will, unfortunately, be closed as of today. Please DO NOT open your store this morning.’

The email was sent to the stores in Newcastle, Jarrow, Blyth, Metrocentre and Hartlepool, among many others. Grainger Games is shutting all 67 of its stores, leaving hundreds of people without jobs. They will be paid until Saturday of this week then they are out of a job.

This is a sad time for physical retailers. From toys to games and even electronics.

High street game retailers have been hard hit in the last few years. While we keep track of physical sales, the amount of games sold online overshadows that of something like a store. Not to mention frequent deals and releases.

Unfortunate, but not unforeseen.
