A support service for male rape victims has been awarded over £200,000 by the Big Lottery Fund.

The charity Someone Cares, based in North Shields, offers help to male victims of childhood rape, sexual assault or witnesses to abuse in its Male Voices Heard project. The service said that the amount of men seeking help in the field has risen by 200% in the last year alone.

This project is just one of 53 in the region to have been given support from the £2.8m funding available. Someone Cares already offers its services to male and female victims who have suffered any kind of domestic violence or abuse.

The chairman of Male Voices Heard started the charity when she realized male victims were “drastically underserved.”

She also said that the £204,035 from the Big Lottery Fund will allow Someone Cares to ‘reach out’ to more male victims who live with what they have been through in silence, or are rejected by female-only services.

“It’s great that there are services for females,” she said, “but it’s a shame there is so little for men.”

“Society tells men to be macho and strong – but they need someone to listen to them too.”
