Of Penguins and…Cut Outs?

A penguin to fell in love with a cardboard cut-out of an anime character passed away this week.
That is the weirdest thing I have ever said on this site. Ever.
Grape, a 21-year-old penguin who lived in Tobu Zoo in Miyashiro, Japan, became incredibly enamoured with an anime cut-out after being rejected by another female penguin. The cut-out was placed in the enclosure for an advert and was from a show called Kemono Friends. The character’s name in Hululu and is an anthropomorphic penguin, which explains the attraction.
He became so attached the zoo staff decided to leave her there.
The zoo’s Twitter account confirmed the penguin’s death, saying:
‘The Humboldt penguin Grape-kun passed away yesterday. Sincere thanks to everyone for supporting him until now.
Thank you also to Hululu, who watched over him until the very end.
And thank you, Grape-kun, for all this time.
Rest peacefully in heaven.’
Twitter had a bit of a meltdown.

Next time I’m at Tobu Zoo, it won’t be the same without you, Grape-kun.
You were so sugoi and tanoshii.
Many will miss you. I do.#グレープ君 pic.twitter.com/T2HG3o8Fen
