In the last decade or so, proms have really become an expected part of school life and almost every school will host one this academic year. For many, the concept of finding a date, picking the perfect suit or dress and organising taxis with friends is exciting.

However, some teenagers and their parents may be under a lot of financial pressure. The cost that some schools charge for tickets is sometimes in triple figures and the costs of transport, outfits and other things can often be a factor meaning a student can’t attend their prom. Even if a family can afford it, it may seem more money than it is worth.

In fact, some schools in the UK have decided that it would be best to totally scrap proms. Some teachers argue that prom is one of many other distractions that students have to face during the all important exam season and that the hours spent preparing for prom is just time taken away from revision.

So what do you think? Is prom really suitable for UK schools?
