Stop with the overnight challenge

Youtube challenges like #myboyfrienddoesmymakeupchallenge and the mannequin challenge are good, harmless fun but with every good challenge comes the salt and ice challenge, the faint challenge and newly, the overnight challenge. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the overnight challenge, the idea is that the Youtuber attempts to spend a full night in a closed store. Thrilling entertainment, I know. Here are some of the most watched overnight challenges on Youtube to give you an idea of just how ridiculous they are:

I mean, this is what the internet was created for, right?

So far, the stores that have involuntarily hosted this challenge include IKEA, Toys R Us and McDonald’s and many, many more.

In the average video, the Youtuber will go to the store around closing time and hide out somewhere until the security guard has done all of their (not so thorough) checks. Once the coast is clear, they’ll head out into the store and potter around for 8+ hours until about 30 minutes before the store opens when they’ll hide out again. Honestly, once you’ve seen one you’ve seen them all.

While the YouTubers never cause any damage to the store, the overnight challenge is still reckless and stupid. If there’s a fire or a robbery overnight, the emergency services aren’t going to be looking for anyone inside if no one knows you’re there. It’s unlikely but you’ve got to consider the risks. The people that have the time and audacity to make these kinds of Youtube videos anyway probably come from the type of family that will sue the store for any harm done to their precious offspring if anything does go wrong, despite the fact it would be entirely the Youtuber’s own fault. Also, managers/companies could sack security guards or other members of staff for oversight. Some people may say it’s a good thing that ineffective security guards are brought to the manager’s attention but those who say this are the same people who find Jake Paul funny. For the sake of a Youtube video that isn’t that entertaining why cause working class people to lose their jobs?

Oh and you can be prosecuted for trespassing or breaking and entering. The overnight challenge won’t seem so funny once you’ve got a $1000 fine to pay to Tesco.
