The Best of Leaders’ Twitter

Everybody has been ranting and raving about the low youth voter turnout and lack of youth engagement in politics, but this GE, the political parties have really upped their Twitter game which should be a great way of appealing to younger people and educating them on who to vote for. Here is a short description and ranking of each of the seven main party leaders’ Twitter accounts and how well they appeal to Twitter users.

7) In a firm last place is the Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister Theresa May. If her account could be summed up in one sound it would just be a long and exhausted yawn. She has only tweeted 239 times which is sub-par by anyone’s standards. She even sucks the fun out of cake stalls:

6) Second to last is Tim Farron. He’s very active on Twitter and posts a couple of pictures, videos or just his own quotations everyday. He just lacks a personal touch and his page may as well just be a continuation of the Lib Dem Twitter page. If his Twitter were an insect, it would be a butterfly – it looks colourful and pretty but it doesn’t really serve much of a purpose.

5) Nicola Sturgeon. This is a very solid and informative Twitter account but it doesn’t have the coldness of Theresa May’s account. Nicola Sturgeon posts pictures and videos of herself engaging wholeheartedly with the public. If her Twitter were a farm animal it would be a horse – they get plenty of jobs done but they’re also fun to be around.

4) Caroline Lucas seems like your sweet auntie who is rebellious yet kind and always has a smile for anyone that comes her way. If her Twitter were a food, it would be a cupcake with a lot of icing and sprinkles. The best thing about Lucas is that she always has time for Nicola Sturgeon and Leanne Wood. These three women and their friendship is probably the nicest thing about UK politics.

In the last election, Natalie Bennett was the Green Party leader and she was a good friend of Sturgeon and Wood. Just look at Ed Miliband wishing he could be part of the #squad.

3) A very human and down-to-earth account from Paul Nuttall takes third place. It’s nice to see him promoting some of his own journalistic pieces from his website every now and then. His Twitter is full of all of the UKIP info that voters could possibly need but he somehow keeps his tweets nice and lighthearted. If his account were a drink, it would be a pint of lager garnished with a slice of lime to try and make it seem classy.

2) Jeremy Corbyn is really more of a Snapchat kind of guy but he does tend to interact a lot with average Joes on Twitter. He’s always tweeting members of the public usually to thank or welcome them and he has some quality videos of himself appealing to the youth including his most recent appearance at the Libertines’ concert which you can find here. Like we said though, his Snapchat makes for better and more informative viewing than his Twitter. If his account were a pizza topping, he’d be pineapple – it’s good but it’s better suited elsewhere.

1) Taking the lead by a long shot is Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood. She posts some Twitter gold on her account including a meme poking fun at Paul Nuttall after he got her name wrong twice at the ITV leaders’ debate. If her tweets were a season, it would be summer – she’s fun but fiery. This is the tweet that won her the top spot on this list:
