The importance of being truthful

It may seem absolutely trivial to speak about why it’s important to be truthful, especially in this post-truth world where anything can be true.

But there is truth, regardless of the ‘alternative facts’. And it’s important to tell it.

Being truthful doesn’t only mean owning up to stealing your sister’s t-shirt or admitting to not doing the essay due today. That is one very obvious part of being truthful and just as important. For anyone wondering, it’s important to be truthful on this level because it means you are authentic and genuinely a good person. To tell lie after lie is not something to be proud of.

However, that’s one branch of being truthful. The other branch is providing the whole picture. This is vital in telling the truth, otherwise you’re distorting facts and contributing to this post-truth world.

There may be cries of “That’s not my job!”, but it is. It is everyone’s job to be honest and to provide the full picture wherever possible. That way, you aren’t being criticised for something you don’t deserve to be criticised for and aren’t being praised for something you don’t deserve praise for.

This is your responsibility as a moral agent. It’s your duty as a human being to be honest and provide the full picture. Acting in your own self-interest can only last so long. And it will never bring you happiness, either.

Tell the truth, kids. It’s worth it so that you can look other people in the eye.
