For those of us who aren’t natural morning people, getting out of bed on a morning can feel like a form of torture. Now that we’re headed into winter and the mornings are becoming cold and dark, the wake-up ritual can seem even more hellish than normal. Luckily though, there are some simple things you can do to start enjoying early morning starts in a non-sadistic way. The benefits of getting up early are endless: more hours in your day, reduced stress levels, time for a nutritious breakfast etc. Some experts even go as far as to say that if you want to be successful in life, you should wake up as early as 4 am. That being said, here are some easy changes you can make so that you don’t ever skip another 9 am lecture again.

1- Try and go to bed at a similar time each night.

This is the boring step but it has to be done. Once your brain gets in the habit of the new routine, it shouldn’t be so difficult to convince yourself to get up.

2- Create a morning ritual that you’ll look forward to starting in the morning.

Buy your favourite brand of coffee and breakfast products. Knowing you have them to look forward to once you get up may reduce that overwhelming temptation to just skip breakfast for an extra twenty minutes in your lovely, warm bed.

3- Reduce screen time before bed.

Light from phones and TVs tricks your brain into thinking it’s daytime and stops you from falling asleep quickly. A good sleep is vital if you want to wake up feeling refreshed and energised.

4- Use a smart alarm.

If you’re still struggling to feel awake on a morning, you can resort to a slightly more extreme method. You can download special alarms on the app store which require you to solve maths/logic puzzles in order to turn them off. Search for ‘smart alarm’ and you’ll find a lot of free and paid apps that should force you to wake up.
