Premier League Updates

After two Premier League losses and one FA Cup loss, NUFC has finally won a game- and what an impressive win it was. This season is Newcastle United’s first back up in the Premier League so it’s not surprising that things initially got off to a shaky start. Over 52,000 fans witnessed NUFC’s 3-0 victory over West Ham at St James’ Park and the atmosphere in the stadium was magic and for the first time in a while, hopeful.

Right from the start, NUFC’s performance was clean and careful and players did not lose focus throughout. Although Ritchie fell out of position a few times while tackling, he was the star of the match and always seemed to be there to save his team members from any sticky situations or mistakes. Eventually, West Ham caught on to Ritchie’s imbalance and tried to play on his left.

Although the first half of the game was steady, both West Ham and Newcastle created a lot of chances for themselves and both teams came too close for comfort. It wasn’t until the 36th minute that Joselu managed to score the game’s first goal- as well as his own first goal at St James’ Park.

Ciaran Clark scored NUFC’s second goal with the help of Matt Ritchie who brought it to the net so that it merely had to be nudged in.

West Ham keeper Joe Hart was literally brought to the floor by a brilliant third goal by substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic and the devastation for Hart was obvious as he hunched over in the goal as Mitro celebrated.

After a few minutes of extra time, spirits in St James’ Park were so high that most of the stadium seemed happy to stay behind for a quick rendition of ‘Mitro’s on fire’.

Let’s hope this success sets the tone for the rest of the Premier League.
