Tunes of the Week

10 May 2016

The choices this week include some more challenging tracks as artists grapple with difficult concepts.

‘4 Degrees’ – ANOHNI

This is a single off ANOHNI’s recently released album, HOPELESSNESS. It sees ANOHNI deliver haunting vocals over a grand backdrop which uses both electronic and orchestral influences. ‘4 Degrees’ is a song about climate change, and how if greenhouse gas emissions continue at their current rate, by the end of the century, the Earth’s temperature will rise by four degrees Celsius. ANOHNI imagines this catastrophe and evokes the death of the world with the chilling repeated line ‘It’s only four degrees’.

‘From a Distance’ – Makeup and Vanity Set

Probably one of the coolest ever finds for Tunes of the Week, ‘From a Distance’ is the theme track from a violent short film called ‘Hit TV’, which will be released as a full film in 2017. Makeup and Vanity Set specially wrote this track for the short film and it’s really cool when it comes on. Of course, ‘From a Distance’ stands alone in its own right; it is in that familiar neon-80s style, similar to the soundtrack of the film ‘Drive’.

‘Timeless’ – James Blake

‘Timeless’ is the fourth track off James Blake’s new album The Colour in Anything. A punchy drum synth and drumbeat open the track and continue throughout ‘Timeless’ as it builds in intensity. True to his style, Blake’s vocals contrast with the chaotic electronica. You can read our full review for The Colour in Anything here.

‘Woman Is A Word’ – Empress Of

Since releasing her promising debut album Me last year, Honduran-American Lorely Rodriguez, known as Empess Of, has been collaborating with other artists. However, the latest release ‘Woman Is A Word’ is a perfect showcase of her solo talent. Set on a synth-pop backdrop, Empress Of’s lyrics challenge ideas of gender and how we perceive it.
