Where the care ends for the Royal Baby

In case you missed it under that rock you’re living under, the future King and his wife Kate Middleton had a baby yesterday. Not just any baby, though – a Royal Baby.

We should all care about this Royal Baby, apparently, because it was born to two people who’ll be at the top of the monarchy. Now, don’t get me wrong, a Royal Baby is newsworthy, and rightly lands on the front page of newspapers. However, it should not be the only thing on the front of newspapers. Why? Because it’s a baby which bears no weight compared to the scandals around the Windrush generation, for example.

What really grates on me about this Royal Baby is the fact that if William and Kate were on ‘proper’ benefits – unlike the inflated ones the taxpayer gives the monarchy to live on their glorified council estate – they would not be given any additional welfare support with this child. The cap is on two children.

Yet when ultra privileged couples have a third child, we’re so happy and even call for them to have more. We don’t view this child as a burden, even though it will also live off the taxpayer, claiming far more than a child born to a parent on benefits would.

So, my care for this Royal Baby stops pretty early on. It’s news, yes, but it’s not relevant. It’s out-of-touch with modern society and reality and a Royal Baby only emphasises the double class standards we cling onto in Britain today.
